Association Forum, USAE Announce 2014 Forty Under 40® Awards Recipients for Association, Nonprofit Professionals

September 5, 2014 [CHICAGO] – The Association Forum and USAE weekly newspaper are pleased to announce the recipients of their second annual Forty Under 40 Awards.

The program recognizes 40 professionals of trade associations, professional associations, association management organizations and charitable or philanthropic entities who are 39 or younger and who demonstrate strong leadership skills, leadership potential along with a solid commitment to the association/nonprofit industry.

The 2014 class of honorees was selected from more than 100 eligible applicants who work for associations and nonprofits across the country. Applications were accepted from June 2 to August 1. To be eligible, applicants had to meet the following criteria:

  • 3+ years of employment at a 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4) or 501(c)(6), or association management organization.
  • Current employment at a 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4) or 501(c)(6), or association management organization.
  • Plans to continue in roles that aid the future of the association and nonprofit community.
  • Exhibit characteristics that demonstrate leadership skills and potential.
  • Under the age of 40 as of December 15, 2014.

Judging of the applications was conducted by Association Forum's Awards & Recognition Committee based on the application, resume and the general eligibility requirements.

"Association Forum has dedicated considerable amounts of time and resources toward determining what's next for the association and nonprofit industry. One item that continues to surface as being of paramount importance is that we, as an industry, must continue to attract and develop the kind of leaders that have the vision and the fortitude to move our industry forward," stated Keith Bura, CPA, CAE, and Interim President and CEO of Association Forum."

We think that the Forty Under 40 Awards program aligns very well with that initiative by elevating the accomplishments of both current and future leaders of associations on a national scale," Bura added.

Of the 2014 class of honorees Carol A. Pape, CAE, Chair, Association Forum Awards and Recognition Committee and Chief Operating Officer, Association of Professional Chaplains stated, "As an association executive who has been working and volunteering in this industry more than 20 years, the opportunity to be part of the Forty Under 40 Awards has been incredibly rewarding. This year, more than 100 high-caliber applications were submitted and virtually all of them, in some capacity, demonstrated qualities the Committee was looking for."

Pape added, "Although it was truly a challenge to make the final decision, and I thank the Awards & Recognition Committee for all of their thoughtful work, this year's honorees and the industry at large should be proud of the contributions and potential that the 2014 Forty Under 40 honorees have to lead our industry into a successful future."

Anne Daly Heller, Executive Editor and Publisher of USAE said of the second Honors class of association professionals, "Knowing how rigorous the competition was, there is no question that these individuals clearly meet the criteria we and Association Forum were seeking – the best and most achieving."

Heller said "USAE itself is honored to continue our partnership with Association Forum in this innovative way to recognize the next generation of association leadership. Giving back to the association community is an integral part of what USAE is. Co-sponsoring the "Forty Under 40®" Honors is in the best tradition of what we do for associations and their future leaders."
