Participants will be invited to ask questions of our industry experts on challenges and opportunities they are currently experiencing in governance.
During the session, attendees will learn about the latest trends in:
• Orientation for Board & Committees
• Offboarding: Keeping Volunteer leaders engaged
Participants will also have an opportunity to share their knowledge and experience of governance related topics, and we will include time for informal networking.
Steve Smith, MS CAE, Account Executive at Association Management Center. Steve Smith, MS CAE, has served as CEO and executive director of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) at Association Management Center (AMC) for more than a decade. AAHPM is the professional home for more than 5,000 physicians and other healthcare providers specializing in hospice and palliative medicine. Steve has a track record of creating high performing boards and working with other association leaders to elevate engagement and collaboration between senior staff and volunteer leadership. This includes generative thinking, strategic prioritization, and strengthening trust, communication, knowledge and understanding among internal and external constituents. Steve has been honored with the Association Forum of Chicagoland’s John C. Thiel Distinguished Service Award and recognized as a “Top Association CEO” by CEO Update magazine. Steve is also an active volunteer leader currently serving on several professional and community boards.
Melissa Swartz, CAE, Volunteer Engagement Manager, ISACA. Melissa cultivates the organization’s volunteer relationships through recruiting and managing working groups, creating a leadership development program, and recognizing outstanding service. Prior to ISACA, she was Awards Program and Budget Manager at IEEE in Piscataway, NJ, managing volunteer committees as well as fostering relationships externally with donors and sponsors, and internally through collaborative partnerships across the organization. Melissa’s career in associations started at the International Engineering Consortium in Chicago, IL, as Academic Affairs Manager, working with three engineering academic organizations handling member services, board relations, chapter development, and conference planning. Melissa received her Bachelor of Arts in Diplomacy and Foreign Affairs from Miami University (OH) and her Master’s in Public Administration with a specialization in Nonprofit Management and Leadership from Walden University. In 2016, Melissa earned the designation of Certified Association Executive (CAE) from the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE).

Non-members can attend one complimentary event before becoming a member of Association Forum. Join others with shared interests and discuss issues, ideas and trends. All guests must be pre-registered!
