Volunteers are indispensable and a critical component to achieving success as a mission-driven association. What are the elements of a successful volunteer management system and — more importantly — how do you make that success a reality?
Through a two-part interactive workshop, you’ll learn critical elements of a volunteer relationship system, participate in a series of simulations to enhance volunteer and staff effectiveness and have an opportunity to discuss successes and challenges. Attendees will assess their ability to engage volunteers, map a volunteer management plan that can be immediately implemented and exchange ideas on practices that lead to success and solutions.
Part one will an in person program on May 31, 2018. Part two will take place on August 2, 2018 at 2:00 pm and will be a virtual check to discuss lessons learned, success stories, lingering challenges and potential solutions.
After attending this session, you’ll be able to:
- Execute a plan to better manage volunteer relationships;
- Set and confirm volunteer/staff expectations;
- Better handle volunteer challenges; and
- Better motivate volunteers.

Kate joined the IFT team in September 2014 to lead strategies for increasing volunteer engagement throughout the organization. After earning her graduate degree in higher education administration, Kate led student engagement and retention initiatives at three institutions for more than 10 years. During this time, Kate gained volunteer experience serving both regional and national boards within her professional associations, which ignited her interest and passion for association management. Kate formerly served in leadership roles with the Information Systems Audit and Control Association, the Association of Nutrition & Foodservice Professionals, and the Nutrition & Foodservice Education Foundation.
Philip Lesser, PhD, CAE
Philip Lesser, PhD, CAE, is a nationally-known leader in association management. His expertise is in assisting volunteer and staff leaders in governance, leadership development, and strategic positioning. Dr. Lesser retired as Vice President of Bostrom, a professional services firm specializing in management and consulting services to nonprofit organizations, after which serving as a CEO and executive of several client associations including among others the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Microscopy Society of America, and the American Association of Orthopædic Medicine, he was the lead consultant with Bostrom Consulting Associates.
Prior to joining Bostrom he was a CEO and executive with national and international associations including the American Bar Association, the International College of Surgeons, and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics; and on the faculty of several universities, including the University of Chicago and The Ohio State University. He has also been an active volunteer, among other positions serving as chair of the Association Forum of Chicagoland and for the American Society of Association Executives [ASAE] chair of both the Certified Association Executive Commission and the CEO Advisory Board.
He is a frequent contributor to professional publications and a popular presenter at educational events. The Association Forum awarded him the John C. Thiel Distinguished Service Award for long-term, multi-faceted leadership. Educated at Washington University and the University of Chicago, he holds a PhD in Administration and Policy Development. In addition, he is a Certified Association Executive [CAE] awarded by the American Society of Association Executives. He also participated in the United States Chamber of Commerce Institutes for Organization Management at the University of Notre Dame. In his spare time he does less downhill skiing and sea kayaking than he would like.
