Development and Succession Planning
Program Description: During this Governance SIG, attendees will learn about best practices and emerging approaches to leadership development and succession planning, for volunteer boards and committees. Changing demographics, generational differences, and emerging technologies provide opportunities and challenges for your organization’s approaches to identifying and preparing the leaders of the future. Learn about ways to engage your most valuable members, create a pipeline of future leaders, and keep your organization strong and relevant.
Learning Objectives: This session will be highly interactive unlocking creativity, energy, and thought leadership around the power of strengthening an organization’s leadership capabilities.
1. Explore whether investing in leadership development can be a means to improve both tangible and intangible assets for an organization.
2. Co-create content that is relatable to current leaders and members who have leadership potential.
3. Understand leadership development curriculum and delivery options.
About the Speakers:
John Forbes is a senior executive whose career has involved leadership roles in two Fortune 50 companies, two health care start-up, and three global non-profit organizations. While at the American Academy of Pediatrics, he served as a faculty member of the Pediatric Leadership Alliance helping to teach leadership skills to pediatric professionals, Boards and Committees, and staff. Currently, he serves as a business advisor to Balanced Growth Consulting and teaches leadership to non-profit executives.
Ken Slaw is the Executive Director, of the Society of Vascular Surgery (SVS) where he is focused on making leadership a core competency of the organization at all levels. Prior to joining the SVS, Ken served as the Director of membership and Strategic Planning at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). In this role, he founded and led the AAP’s leadership development programs for staff, Board, and volunteer leaders. His leadership journey includes the Presidency of the American Association of Medical Society Executives (AAMSE).
