Never be caught unprepared again!

Chances are that while you read this, an unexpected disaster is causing an organization stress and confusion and is affecting its long-term ability to provide products and services to its customers. Are the organization’s leaders prepared to handle it? Will they be able to recover? Disasters of every shape, size, look and feel happen all the time, affecting businesses, people's jobs, lives and families.

In the first half of this session, we will delve into developing, managing, maintaining, and exercising a Business Continuity or Disaster Recovery Plan. It can be a daunting task. All you hear is "We need to develop a Business Continuity Plan, but it’s too labor intensive.""Maintaining the BCP takes too much time." "We have this great Plan, but no one knows what’s in it." Sometimes it seems like only divine intervention will help. Learn the keys to developing, implementing and maintaining an effective business continuity management program. Also, explore the key elements of a crisis communications plan so you can be prepared should an issue escalate.

In the second half of the session we will put this new knowledge into action by participating in a highly interactive mock disaster tabletop exercise.  You will be put in the throes of a real-life disaster situation, as it unfolds. You will make the critical decisions any organization will have to make - and deal with the consequences of those decisions! After you've finished, you'll understand the importance of planning, in advance, for a disaster or other business disruption.

  • Learn the 10 Key Steps to an Effective Business Continuity Plan
  • Review Response Procedures for some of today's major threats and hazards
  • Determine the risks and the impact on your organization in the event of a disruption
  • Understand the principles of emergency management and how they apply to Business Continuity Planning
  • Understand how effective “Before, During and After” planning can be.
  • Understand the bedrock rules when responding to a crisis
  • Anticipate hot button issues/scenarios, how they might escalate and be prepared for them
  • Recognize what makes crisis situations worse and develop an action plan to communicate with key, influential audiences 
  • Monitor and assess the situation on social media

Bob Mellinger, CBCV 
Bob Mellinger, CBCV, is the founder and president of Attainium Corp, which delivers business continuity, emergency preparedness and crisis management services.
 
Bob is a frequent speaker on the topics of business continuity, contingency planning, emergency preparedness and crisis management, delivering sessions ranging from The Basics of Continuity Planning to the Impact of Today’s Threats and Hazards, as well as customized, interactive mock-disaster tabletop exercises known as the Disaster Experience.

Bob is a graduate of the University of Dayton with a major in Computer Science, and has a graduate certificate from George Washington University’s Institute for Crisis, Disaster and Risk Management.
 
Mary Erangey
Mary Erangey, a senior vice president at Public Communications Inc., is a communications strategist with 25 years of experience supporting education, healthcare, corporate and nonprofit clients.

Strategic messaging and story-telling lie at the heart of her success. She has managed messaging campaigns for internal corporate communications and provided communications counsel on sensitive legal issues, labor-related issues, regulatory scrutiny, controversial education announcements, leadership changes and major corporate announcements. She also has led award-winning media relations campaigns and developed award-winning marketing materials.

Mary has completed the MIT-Harvard Public Disputes Program, Dealing With An Angry Public, which is a project of the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School. Mary also serves on the Chicago Advisory Committee of
the national News Literacy Project.
 
Beth Schlesinger
Beth Schlesinger, a vice president at Public Communications Inc., is one of the agency’s leading media strategists. With nearly 20 years of public relations experience supporting a broad range of corporate and nonprofit clients, she has particular expertise in healthcare.  

Beth supervises the development and implementation of a wide range of programs for association and healthcare clients. These programs include issues management, strategic analysis and consultation as well as member communications, media relations and other outreach programs.

Beth is certified by the Center for Communication Compliance in Healthcare Regulatory Compliance for Public Relations, and is certified in both Internet Marketing Fundamentals and as a Social Media Practitioner by Market
